1 = domestic (US) long-distance call; 011= international long-distance call
The number of digits in an international phone number varies
To direct dial from the US to an international location, dial either:
011-country code-city code-telephone number, or
011-country code-telephone number (depending on the country)
Common Dialing Errors
The most common customer error is dialing a –0- before the city code. The second most common customer error is leaving out the country code. For example, suppose a phone number in Yokohama, Japan is given as:
045-222-2222. The 011 and country code (81) are missing. There is a 0 before the city code.
To fix this: add 011, add the country code, drop the 0 before the city code, and dial the remaining digits. Therefore, the proper dialing sequence would be:
011-81-45-222-2222

Sending an International Fax
Sometimes a single phone number is used for voice and fax. So, if an international fax won’t complete, call the number. If a person answers, ask them to turn on their fax machine.
To fax using an auth code, the customer must program in pauses:
1-(pause)-auth code-(pause)-international fax number (011,etc.)
Fax machines differ, so the customer may need experiment to find the correct number of pauses for your particular fax machine.
